Family weekend in the Netherlands

It's clear that we all need a break from time to time. Work, school, obligations: sometimes it is just too much. Unfortunately, we do not always have the time to go out for a whole week or more. That is why it is important to plan a weekend for a family trip in the Netherlands every now and then. Doing something completely different with the people you care about can give you a moment to yourself and each other. Then the problems start. And where will we go? Some people want to do something sporty, others want to look around and still others want to enjoy themselves. How do you get everyone on the same page? After all, you don't want to go out with angry faces. That is why we thought it would be a good idea to list some family weekend ideas.

Perhaps you prefer a rural environment. Sometimes a family weekend is nice with a bit more peace and quiet around you. That is why we wanted to mention the possibility of going to Giethoorn or Ommen. Ommen is located in Salland, in the valley of the Overijssel part of the river Vecht. As early as the year 1100, this was a strategic place to cross the river. Of course, you will get a lot out of this long history during a visit. What makes the region especially wonderful is the ample opportunity to enjoy the landscape. Walking and cycling are outdoor activities that also allow you to take in the surroundings. The picturesque village of Vilsteren, for example, is worth a bike ride in itself, as are the Saxon farmhouses in Beerze. Relax in a rural environment where everyone still pays attention to each other.

You can also experience culture in Ommen. There is a regional museum and the National Tin Figure Museum. You will notice how friendly and helpful people are around here. Moreover, you can park for free in the centre. Everything and everyone makes you feel welcome. Isn't that what makes you feel at ease when you are out with your family in your own country? There are many hidden gems in the east of the Netherlands and Ommen is certainly one of them.

Another destination in Overijssel that is somewhat better known is Giethoorn. The biggest attraction is simply the beauty of the village that is cut through by the water. Sailing through Giethoorn is not only fun, but also the only way to discover this beautiful place. This can be done by an organised tour, but there are also many possibilities to rent a boat. Get out and visit one of the many shops, museums or galleries. But there are many more activities to experience ashore!

Hikers, cyclists, climbers and miniature golfers: there is something for everyone. Or how about archery? In short, Giethoorn is truly a destination for active pursuits, but at a pleasant, village-like pace. That's a good thing when you want to have a quiet chat during a family weekend! Of course, Slagharen is primarily known for its spectacular attractions. For example, the Gold Rush is one of the most exciting roller coasters in Europe. How about experiencing weightlessness for a while in Free Fall? You can ride or sail on the Mine Train or the Ripsaw Falls adventure, where everything is about the Wild West. We didn't even talk about the Big Wheel, The Pirate, The Eagle, El Torito or the other exciting attractions. Some attractions are more suitable for younger children, but there are also attractions that will make even the toughest dad scream!  

You will stay in the spirit of the Wild West if you have a bite to eat at Cartwright's, the Boston Grill or one of the many other restaurants. The adventure continues even after dinner, because those who stay overnight in the Wild West are treated to even more family entertainment in the Music Hall after closing time. A family trip is about making wonderful memories together with the family. We know the magic of theatre only too well. Your children sit down in the hall and then, when the lights go out: that sparkle in their eyes, in their faces! To dream away until the day is over. How nice it is to have your accommodation literally around the corner. Before you know it, they are back in bed, recharging themselves for another magical day.

That means swimming for some, splashing in the paddling pool for others and lazing on our own beach for yet others. We are also sure that there will be some who will discover our super-slides. Some of our guests stay at the campsite. For guests with different wishes, we have very exciting accommodations in store, especially the Wigwam and the Cowboy Cottage are very popular.
